I think it's because going green has become the new theme of the hood. Think I'm lying? Consider how most white people leave the AC on all day. Consider how most white people don't like energy saving light bulbs because they're not as bright as traditional light bulbs (ask any white person). Consider how most white people wouldn't ride a bike to work because it's "uncomfortable". Consider how just about all white people wouldn't dare ride a skateboard down the sidewalk because they don't want to look "silly". Speaking on behalf of someone who is mostly black, I can be the first to tell you that if white people don't "get it" or "just aren't into that stuff", us black people are going to jump all over it. So to put it bluntly, going greed is totally hood.
Exhibit A: The Cool Kids

Ever since the Cool Kids entered my collective consciousness it has been a personal goal of mine to tell everyone how totally awesome these dudes are. They're two guys who rap about real shit. Like BMX bikes. Cereal. Playing Street Fighter on Sega Genesis. You know, shit that matters. While I admit, when the Cool Kids starred in a commercial for Rhapsody, this set me back in my goal to convince the world to recognize the them as the truth. However, as if by fate, they were dropped from the commercial and replaced by a longer segment with that bitch who sings "I'm not gonna write you a love song!". You know, the bitch with the car accident nose? But I digress ... going green is hood. In the song Black Mags, Mikey says,
Chuck got the red wheels and the white mags, but it's all good
Got the gold hundred spokes like Boys in the Hood
With the lime green frame, dollars on the bike
Seat, handlebar grips, is the same as my Nikes
In the mold, the gold I use for my spokes
And the frame, the same as I use for my chain
Exhibit B: Lupe Fiasco

Lupe is a stylish man from the windy city so clearly he knows the importance of being environmentally friendly. I haven't fervently imposed Lupe upon my friends quite nearly as much as I have the Cool Kids, but maybe I should. He's got the same idea on his song 'Kick/Push', referring to the way you operate a skateboard (white people, you should write this down). Apart from this, Lupe has the common sense of using beats from fellow Chicago native Kanye West, yet does not allow him to rap too much on his LP. I mean Kayne is kind of a loud mouth ... but I digress. When Lupe raps,
My man got a little older
Became a better roller
Yea, no helmet, hellbent on killing himself
That's what his mama said, but he was feeling himself
Got a little more swagger in his style
While Kick/Push certainly isn't Lupe's best song by far (you should check out The Cool), you can see that he's one of the other innovative rappers who realize how hood going green is. I think he's really tapping into something here. In fact, I'm really considering starting my own independent rap career, producing my own beats, and rapping about some environment friendly hood shit like riding a segway. After all, it's my real hood people just trying to survive who ride fucking segways.

Why the hell aren't there any rap songs about segways? I should monopolize on this shit.

You are, putting it simply, the best.
Direct quote: "So to put it bluntly, going greed is totally hood."
If it was cool (and only if it was cool) I would drop an album based on macroeconomics.
